HOW DOES AMANDA ZMC DISCOVER TAPE DRIVES

This article is for Amanda Enterprise (AE) v. 3.1

Amanda looks at device file names that matches patterns /dev/rmt/[d]+ (on Solaris platforms) and /dev/nst[d]+ (on Linux platforms) on the Amanda backup server.

For all the device files that are readable and writeable by amandabackup user and matches the above pattern, Amanda uses mt command to validate the tape drive.

If mt command is successful (returns zero), the tape device file is listed in the Admin Devices page in the Zmanda Management Console.

Users can add tape devices that were not discovered, manually to the ZMC using Other selection in the drop down menu.

Note: Amanda Enterprise works with all tape devices that can be managed using mt command even if they were not discovered by ZMC.
