Degraded Mode errors

This article is for Amanda Enterprise (AE)

Issue Symptoms

A message in the FAILURE SUMMARY section of a report on the Report| Summary page shows one of the following errors:

  • [can’t dump new disk in degraded mode]
  • [can’t dump ‘holdingdisk never’ dle in degraded mode]

[can’t dump new disk in degraded mode]

The first, full backup of a new entry (“disk”) cannot be performed because Amanda is not finding an acceptable tape to write to.

Resolution

Amanda cannot write to tape either because there is no acceptable volume to use or because there was some taping error during the backup run. Please check the Notes section of the report on the Report| Summary page to determine if there was some taping error during the backup run or Amanda could not find an acceptable volume to use for the backup run. If a taping error occurred, correct the error for the subsequent run. If no acceptable volumes were found, please see TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No acceptable volumes found].

[can’t dump ‘holdingdisk never’ dle in degraded mode]

Amanda cannot write the backup entry to the staging area or “holdingdisk” due to a configuration setting. The run went into degraded mode which means Amanda doesn’t have a tape to write to. In this mode, Amanda will then at least try to run all possible incremental backups to the staging area instead. Amanda is explaining that, for this entry, it won’t do this because the entry is explicitly set to never using the staging area “holdingdisk never” — which can be set by the user in the Advanced Options section on the Backup| What page and is the default for all direct NDMP backups.

Resolution

Please check the Notes section of the report on the Report| Summary page to determine if there was some taping error during the backup run or Amanda could not find an acceptable volume to use for the backup run. If a taping error occurred, correct the error for the subsequent run. If no acceptable volumes were found, please see TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No acceptable volumes found].
